About:

Uplands is one of the most historic training establishments in Lambourn and has been home to some superb trainers over the years including; Fred Winter, Charlie Brooks, Lavinia Taylor and Stan Moore – they have trained some great horses, including: Bula, Lanzorote, Suny Bay and Gingembre.

Training horses in Lambourn has so much to offer and Warren feels very lucky with there being so many different places to go – you don’t feel like you are in a training centre and yet you have the backing of superb ground staff who work tirelessly to ensure the gallops are in excellent condition and are maintained to a very high spec.

Warren is the son of a farmer and his family always had Point to Pointers on the farm. From a very early age he has been surrounded by horses and other animals. He used to go Point to Pointing with his parents nearly every weekend and got the bug for horse racing from there.

His first job in racing was with David Nicholson at the time when Alan King was there as assistant and jockeys including Choc Thornton, Adrian Maguire and Richard Johnson. In his first season he looked after a horse called Silver Wedge who won seven on the bounce and then finished second in the Triumph Hurdle.

David Nicholson instilled in you that you could be successful if you worked hard and was a stickler for standards. He set them very high and if you didn’t match them, you were not going to do well there. After a short riding career in which he did ride a few winners for Josh Gifford, Lady Herries and David Gandolfo, Warren then worked as Head Lad for Bryan Smart where they had a successful time together before Bryan moved to Thirsk. He was then approached by Oliver Sherwood to work as his Head Lad and later Assistant Trainer.

Warren and Oliver worked well together and they steadily built up Oliver’s string again. After seven years with Oliver, Warren was head hunted by Malcolm Denmark as a salaried Trainer at Weathercock House where he spent three years training successfully and progressing each season.

Charles Egerton then bought Uplands and approached Warren offering him the top yard to train from in his own right where he has been since July 2012. Warren sets his own high standards in the workplace, is very hands on and part of the team. A lot of his staff have been with him since he first started and work very hard to make a happy and successful workplace.
