Established in Barnard Castle for over 70 years, we have evolved from a traditional Dales practice into three speciality areas, focusing on Equines, Farm Animals and Pets thereby remaining capable of dealing with virtually everything the domestic animal world presents.
We are a modern equine practice with 4 dedicated equine vets, each with their own specialised areas of interest. The equine department has 2 nurses who attend your horses daily requirements as well as guiding you through the admission and discharge of your horse.
Why choose Castle Vets to look after your horse? Because we have excellent facilities! Our custom-built surgery includes a fully-equipped operating theatre complete with arthroscopy equipment and a separate padded anaesthetic and recovery box. A specially designed box enables the safe handling of horses, including mares with foals at foot, for examinations such as pregnancy diagnosis using ultrasound scanning, or for endoscopy to investigate wind problems or chronic coughs.
We also have secure stabling for inpatients. But more importantly our Vets are committed to continual professional development, they are keen to enhance their knowledge to ensure the best care for your horse. They are also keen to share knowledge and information and very regularly hold client talks.
We have full stabling facilities for our equine in-patients. Out of hours and overnight we do not have a vet on-site permanently. The on-call vet checks in-patients on a regular basis, depending on the level of care they require. If we feel a patient requires more intensive monitoring and treatment than we are able to offer we will refer them to an equine hospital for this level of care.
