Brought up on a traditional South Devon farm, Martin was riding from an early age. In his teens he hunted with the South Devon and Dart Vale. Following a break for further education, he returned to Devon and in his early twenties rode in local point-to-points.
After success in this sphere Martin took out a permit to train, winning with his first runner at Exeter. The following years saw his yard thrive with many good winners, maximising the talent of horses whose past form could at times be considered less favourable than others. Having completed the very first Racehorse Trainers course at Newmarket, Martin soon relocated to his new yard at Knaves Ash, near Newton Abbot.
Since then winners have come from both the flat and over jumps. Apex (five in a row), Ryedale Ovation, BallyConn, Tzora, Detroit Red, Red Twist, Bold Perk, Safe Catch and many others were improved for the move to his training establishment. Almost all of these multiple winners were bought at the sales inexpensively and repaid the investment handsomel
With healthy, good quality horses, excellent staff and first class facilities, Martin Hill Racing is on an upward curve. Care and attention to details in all aspects of the training regime are bearing rich fruit with recent winners of good quality races.
